Questions patients ask

What is bladder pain syndrome?
Persistent pain or pressure felt in the bladder, usually with frequency and urgency, when infection and other causes have been excluded. It is a diagnosis reached by ruling out, not by a single test.
What is ruled out first?
Infection on culture, stones, and bladder pathology — the last with cystoscopy where indicated. Repeated antibiotics for negative cultures is one of the commonest reasons this condition goes unrecognised for years.
How is it managed?
In steps: diet and fluid triggers, bladder retraining, oral medication, and bladder instillations or endoscopic treatment where the findings support them. Each step is reviewed against a symptom and pain diary.
Is it curable?
It is a long-term condition that is managed rather than cured for most people. What changes with proper assessment is the level of symptom control and how much of daily life the condition takes up.
